Richard Wayne Bandler, born on February 24, 1950, holds a Ph.D. and D.Litt. He is a hypnotist and musician, credited as the originator of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Neuro Hypnotic Repatterning (NHR), and Design Human Engineering (DHE). His CDs, designed for both teaching and entertainment, take listeners on hypnotic journeys. Dr. Richard Bandler, also recognized as the co-inventor (with John Grinder) of NLP, a set of concepts and techniques meant to comprehend and alter human behavior patterns, refers to these as technologies.
Bandler also developed follow-up systems named Design Human Engineering (DHE) and Neuro Hypnotic Repatterning (NHR).
It’s worth noting there exists another Richard Bandler who edits conference proceedings for various neuro-physiological technical conferences.
Co-founding NLP:
Richard Bandler received an invitation from psychiatrist Robert Spitzer to attend and document a teaching seminar by family therapist Virginia Satir. Later, he assisted Spitzer in editing a book by gestalt therapist Fritz Perls, The Gestalt Approach (1973), and checked transcripts for Eye Witness to Therapy (1973). According to Spitzer, Bandler began emulating Fritz Perls’ speech and behavior. Bandler, a math student, started studying Gestalt therapy, and John Grinder, a linguistics specialist, pointed out that Bandler’s questions and comments could be explained using transformational grammar, Grinder’s field of expertise. In 1974, Bandler and Grinder started modeling the language patterns used by Perls, Satir, and Hypnotherapist Milton H. Erickson, which they published in their books The Structure of Magic Volumes I & II (1975, 1976), Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson, Volumes I & II (1975, 1977), and Changing With Families (1976). These works laid the groundwork for NLP.
They developed a therapy model called the meta-model, which became their first book, The Structure of Magic, Volume I (1975). Bandler, who was Bateson’s landlord (Bateson taught at UCSC, Kresge College, as did Grinder) in a community near Ben Lomond, was significantly influenced by Bateson. Bateson introduced Bandler and Grinder to Milton Erickson, a foundational influence on NLP. In 1975, Bandler established his publishing company, Meta Publications, and published Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson Volume I (1975).
Bandler and Grinder authored The Structure of Magic Volume II (1976), Patterns of the Hypnotic Techniques of Milton H. Erickson Volume II (1977), and Changing With Families (1976), co-authored with Virginia Satir herself.
Richard Bandler contributed to many models and techniques now taught in NLP, including the meta-model, Milton model, anchoring, swish pattern, reframing, belief change, nesting loops, chaining states, and submodalities applications.
Bandler also modeled Moshe Feldenkrais, an Israeli physicist and founder of the Feldenkrais school of bodywork, and later published his book “The Elusive Obvious.” He incorporated elements of this bodywork into his classes.
Bandler has dedicated his career to developing and presenting NLP and related concepts through books, public speaking, and consulting. His audience includes individuals seeking personal development and businesses using these concepts to enhance sales.
Richard Bandler, co-founder of NLP with John Grinder, delved into Gestalt therapy and began working with Virginia Satir. Bandler and Grinder’s collaboration led to the development of NLP’s foundational concepts. Bandler has authored several books on NLP, exploring its applications in various fields. His later focus involved submodalities, Neuro-Sonics, and Design Human Engineering (DHE). Besides his creative contributions, Bandler is known for his humor, advanced language patterns, and dynamic training style.
