Ron Scanlon, a paraplegic master of the martial art of Kung Fu San Soo, died peacefully at his home in Ontario, California on June 11 due to complications related to kidney failure. He was 58 years old.
Scanlon grew up in Southern California and became one for 9 years, the result of a car accident. “He told me he wanted to learn martial arts when he watched it on TV as a teenager,” recalls Candace Cable, a multi-sport Paralympic athlete who has known him since playing wheelchair basketball in the late 1970s. eight-time national champions, the Casa Colina Condors.) “He said he went to various martial arts venues and asked about taking classes and they kind of surprised him,” she recalls.
At age 17, Scanlon found Bill Lasiter’s martial arts studio, a wheelchair ten miles away from his home. Lasiter took him on for lessons – the beginning of a passion that Scanlon would pursue throughout his life. “He was totally dedicated,” says Cable. “He pushes his chair into the studio, arrives early and stays late.”
