Chinese herbal medicine, a highly intricate and potent modality, has undergone simplification in its introduction through modern methods, influenced significantly by the Western pharmaceutical model. However, historical teachings diverge from this streamlined approach.

In the past, the path to becoming a herbalist demanded a profound understanding of herbs beyond mere categorization or rote memorization. The initial stages of learning focused on acquiring a deeper comprehension of herbs, involving practical experiences in identifying and gathering them. Observations extended beyond the herb itself to encompass its environment. Furthermore, apprentices partook in the consumption of various botanicals, closely noting their personal reactions.

While in-depth knowledge of individual herbs remained crucial, the apprentice primarily dedicated their time to observing and assisting the master. Observing how herbs interacted in formulations took precedence, analogous to understanding a person through their interactions. The qualities of herbs emerged through their interactions with others, mirroring the effects of herbal combinations on individuals. Simultaneously, apprentices honed the skill of herbal preparation (pao zhi).

This comprehensive 16-session program spans a year and aims to transmit herbal medicine in the most traditional manner possible. Jeffrey Yuen emphasizes that the course’s purpose is to teach herbs in the traditional way—reflecting the method of instruction he himself received.
