“”Personality – it seems sometimes that live in a society somewhat obsessed with the power of personality. The media idolises or terrorises showbiz ‘personalities’ because they know this is what draws the readers. Businesses make decisions about employees based on ‘personalty profiles’ and popular magazines and websites run pop quizzes to tell you what or who you are like.
A big part of this obsession is around the buy in to the idea that our personality is what is going to dictate our outcomes in life – our successes and failures. If I am ’x’ type of person then I will be able to do ‘y’ and if not I won’t. We are also seduced into thinking that personality is key to being accepted and liked – we buy into notions of ‘charisma’ being a thing that resides in personality and that ‘first impressions last’. This can even draw us into trying to micro-manage how we ‘come across’ or attempting to alter our personality in order to ‘win friends and influence people’ (and then worrying that we are not being our ‘authentic selves’ – “just be you” is the still personality centric counter advice)In this talk I will be suggesting the radical idea that – if you really want to engage influentially and productively with life – all of this is a distraction… and a rather destructive one at that.
