Description
This DVD revolves around the concept of “Combining Stick & Footwork” (CS&F). CS&F marked the inaugural release in the Dog Brothers Martial Arts DVD series and followed our “Real Contact Stickfighting” series. In my experience as both a fighter and teacher, I’ve noticed that many individuals struggle with effectively coordinating their footwork and striking techniques during combat. Moreover, I’ve observed that most Caucasian practitioners face significant challenges when undergoing the necessary training to attain skills applicable in high-pressure situations. This is precisely why CS&F adopts a fundamental approach, focusing on building essential skills from the ground up.
Contrastingly, the Snaggletooth Variations, while initially introducing the crucial “basic power combo,” which I deem essential, practical, and accessible for individuals in the early stages of their journey to mastering offensive and defensive maneuvers, delves deeper into advanced techniques tailored for professionals and intermediate fighters. The content, concepts, and training progression presented in this DVD demand considerable time and effort for most practitioners to fully grasp.
The approach in Snaggletooth Variations is profoundly bilateral, emphasizing both ground fighting and stickwork. It covers techniques for both single-stick and double-stick scenarios. In the context of double-stick training, due to its progressive nature, one stick can and should function as if it were a single stick.
Central to this training is the concept of bilateralism, forming the foundation for 360-degree skills. It aligns with the idea of “block attacking,” a concept explored in our previous DVD titled “Attacking Blocks.” If you’ve engaged with our “Attacking Blocks” DVD, these principles will be familiar to you and facilitate your understanding.
As you progress through Snaggletooth Variations, the training method disrupts conventional patterns by “shattering the mirror.” The term “mirror” refers to patterns where right always counters right, and left always counters left, creating a predictable sequence. Breaking the mirror involves techniques where left counters right or vice versa. This approach introduces fusion techniques into your repertoire, moving beyond traditional patterns.
Throughout the Snaggletooth Variations, I am joined by Guro Cão, whose expertise greatly enhances the instructional content. Additionally, the DVD includes bonus footage showcasing a unique lesson on training Punong Guro Edgar Sulite Salty Dog in my backyard, offering insights into the influence of Lameco in the material presented.
Dog Brothers Attacking Blocks sheds light on the significance of close-quarter combat techniques even when physically engaging in a fight may not be feasible. This DVD explores two fundamental forms of close-hitting and blocking techniques. While the idea of “attack blocks” may sound contradictory – blending a defensive action like “blocking” with an offensive strategy – mastering this concept expands your fighting skills into unexplored dimensions, opening doors to a plethora of possibilities.
The instructional content begins with a concise overview of the 7 Ranges, providing context for the material covered. Guro Crafty demonstrates the “Attacking Blocks Pattern Right 1A,” an intricate yet simple pattern designed to enhance head protection and counter attacks effectively. This pattern serves as a foundation, allowing training partners to practice techniques dynamically, ranging from full takedowns to foot grabs, cuts, and medium strikes, catering to various combat scenarios.
In essence, “If you see him taught, you see him fought” – embodying the essence of Martial Arts Dog Brothers. It’s time for action, beginning with a detailed analysis of headshots and their impact, both with and without protective headgear. The content then progresses to real-life demonstrations of attacking blocks in action, showcasing their effectiveness in combat situations.
