Description
Shitō-ryū (in Japanese: 糸東流, Shitō-ryū) is a style of Karate, created (officially) in 1931 by Kenwa Mabuni, who synthesized the styles, Shuri-te and Naha-te, in the scope of preserving the techniques taught at the time by renowned masters Ankō Itosu, of the Shuri style, and Kanryō Higaonna, of Naha-te, maintaining those forms and variations of kata taught by the latter, resulting in the largest repertoire of Karate styles. Still in this regard, the name of the lineage was given in honor of the two masters, as the technical repertoire of the system revolves around the systems of these two great Karate masters, who also represented the main aspects of the martial art.
The style is one of four officially recognized by the World Karate Federation. Another important moment of the lineage is the fact of forming other great masters, who ended up establishing their own entities, with their own characteristics, but always connected to the main strand, such as the Shūkōkai or Tani-Ha Shitō-ryū, Seishin-Kai or Motobu-ha Shitō-ryū and Hayashi-ha Shitō-ryū, Keishin-kai or Inoue-ha Shitō-ryū Keishin-kai, etc.
